(2)Car Transport
The overall volume of car traffic flowing into the inner city in the two hours between 7.00 and 9.00 is approximately 55,000 trips (approximately 38,000 vehicle trips), with the main concentration occurring between 7.00 and 8.00 (see Figure 3-6).
The breakdown of this total shows that most car traffic heads for Table Bay BVD on the north-east side (15,800 trips) and Eastern BVD (12,800 trips) and that traffic from the south-west direction heads into Western BVD (4,100 trips) (see Figure 3-7).
(3)Rail Transport
Approximately 34,000 rail passengers alight at the central station during the rush hour (7.00-9.00), with the main concentration occurring between 7.30 and 8.30 (see Figures 3-8 and 3-9).
(4)Bus Transport
The number of passengers flowing into the inner city area by bus during the rush hour is comparatively low at approximately 3,800 trips. Moreover, as can be seen from the movements per hour shown in Figure 3-10, there is no clear-cut peak.
The main boarding and alighting point of bus passengers who enter and leave the inner city is the Golden Acre Bus Terminus located next to Cape Town Station.
(5)Taxi Transport
The number of people entering the inner city by taxi (Minibus-Taxi: 15 passengers) during the rush hour is roughly 13,890, just more than double the number of bus users, indicating how much of a central role is played by taxis in public road transportation. Moreover, approximately 7,700 people use taxis to leave the inner city during the same period, showing that taxis act to encourage both concentration into and dispersion away from the inner city (see Figure 3-11).
